Les Rambles in the morning:
Sequoia managed to get some post cards off. Hopefully they will arrive back in Australia before we do.
I had taken a look at the program and really wanted to go check out the castellas, human pyramids that are a big feature of the La Mercé Festival.
We wandered up a little street and everyone was sitting down as though they were waiting for something to happen...so we did too.
After a bit of a wait, the parade began!
I'm not sure what all the characters were, but the Spaniards got very excited. There was lots of pomp and music and it really was quite exciting.
An English-speaking onlooker was telling us that each year they keep one giant puppet to place in a museum and burn the rest at the last pyrotechnic event. There is so much detail in each costume.
This little girl in the front was pretty awesome with her drum, taking the lead of all the other drummers...
I imagine the puppets are terribly heavy to carry...definitely deserved a rest!
...and my favourite: Bird with boobs!!!
After the parade we made our way up the street to where the castellas would do their thing. Talk about getting up close and personal with a few hundred Spaniards:
It was pretty amazing to watch:
Very brave of the little one!
Afterwards, we made our way back down to Barceloneta for some lunch.
Delicious meal of tapas and sangria:
Catalan Creme Brûlée didn't disappoint for dessert.
A little walk on the beach after our very filling meal...
2 girls on the beach:
We stopped to listen to these guys place some tunes. Fantastic!!!
In the evening we decided to give the big pyrotechnics show a miss as the train would have been at capacity but made our way down Les Rambles to Plaça Catalunya to hear a performance by around 50 drummers that was pretty spectacular!
All in all, a fantastic day. Loving Barcelona!!!
