Palace Versailles

We awoke to a beautiful Paris morning and decided to take ourselves out to visit Versailles.

Another trip on the ever entertaining metro...

Full of artwork and music...

Arriving in Versailles, headed to the Palace. I'm not sure that because it was a Saturday it was particularly busy, but the crowds were pretty unbelievable.

However, we were in for a treat!

All I can say is that it is stunning:

As you walk through the palace rooms, there are various periods of time in history represented and each room lovingly restored as to the time and the occupant's decor at the time.

A bed fit for a king:

The frescos are exquisite:

I'm afraid that the effect of the famous Hall of Mirrors was definitely lost with the milling crowds. I can only imagine what it would be like to wander through unaccosted.

The photos certainly don't do it justice - I did my best around all the tour groups et al.

We then wandered out to the gardens.

A theme I am noticing in France is the use of gravel throughout their gardens and parks. I find it quite stark. But with the volume of people who visit, I can see the practicality of it.

Whilst we promenaded around the grounds, we were treated to piped symphonies playing from the hedges and the fountains bubbling away.

Lots of little groves to hide from the crowds in:

An ice-cream by the lake, where you can hire little boats:

Such a beautiful place.

We rounded out the day with another delicious French meal. My gorgeous student, Renee, that I had been mentoring back at work had wanted to shout us a lovely meal in a Parisienne cafe, and it certainly was lovely.

Our waiter was really quite cheeky and made much fun at my attempts at speaking French. The food was amazing though!

We then decided to walk our dinner off a bit and took another walk up to Sacre Coeur, discovering a fun and lively market along the way.

We cheated and made our way back down the hill on the silly-named funiculaire.

For how tiny the apartment was, we were pleased to get back and rest our weary heads and feet.
